Continental is the fourth largest tire manufacturer in the world after Bridgestone, Michelin and Goodyear. It was started in Hanover, Germany in 1871 manufacturing only rubber. Continental makes tires for many companies including VW, Ford, Volvo, BMW, GM, Toyota, Honda and Porsche. Continental entered the US in 1987 after purchasing the American tire company General Tire. Its US headquarters are in Lancaster County, SC
